April 19 (ScienceDaily) -- Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto have found that taking American ginseng before a meal reduces blood sugar in people both with and without diabetes. The study appears in the April 9 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, a publication of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

A researcher in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary has discovered a new type of gene therapy that brings about the remission of Type 1, insulin dependent diabetes. Ji-Won Yoon, PhD, the Julia McFarlane Chair in Diabetes Research, and his colleague, Dr. Hyun Chul Lee of Korea, have found that by injecting a specialized gene into diabetic rats and mice, the scientists are able to control blood glucose levels.
