The Diabetes Programme of the Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health (NMH/DIA), is responsible for providing to the World Health Organization's (WHO) 190 Member States, advice on appropriate policies and strategies for monitoring, prevention and control of diabetes. The scale of the problem that diabetes poses to world health is still widely under recognized. Recent estimates predict that if current trends continue the number of persons with diabetes will more than double, from 140 million to 300 million in the next 25 years. The greater proportion of the increase is likely to occur in the developing countries, which are the communities which can least afford it.
