freshmeat started back in September 1997 as a quick and dirty HTML page for personal purposes (i.e. to keep track of current versions of software used on Linux systems shipped to customers). As the interest in my little non-public page grew, I published a preliminary static HTML page on a homepage server of my ISP. Updates were done by editing the HTML file in a shell and that was pretty much it. No back issues, no searching capabilities, no nothing.
One day I was shown the capabilities of PHP and a connected database and immediately fell in love with it. Shortly after that, freshmeat became its name, the first scripts were written to ease maintenance and people started mailing me announcements of newly written or updated applications.
Various features have been added during the months and countless rewrites of the engine took place until freshmeat reached what it is now - a very well visited software repository carrying a complete set of applications for almost any purpose one could think of.

An advanced BSD UNIX operating system for "PC-compatible" computers, developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. FreeBSD offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones. While you might expect an operating system with these features to sell for a high price, FreeBSD is available free of charge and comes with full source code. Native language mirror sites are also available.

The GNU Project started in 1984 to develop a complete free Unix-like operating system. Variants of the GNU system, using Linux as the kernel, are now widely used; though often called "Linux", they are more accurately called "GNU/Linux systems". The first test release of "the" GNU system, using the GNU Hurd as the kernel, was made in August 1996.
